Where Are my Boots?
By Kathy Fan
It was a jolly December morning at the North Pole, everyone was busy preparing for Christmas. The elves were excitedly making gifts for Santa to bring to the children on Christmas Eve. The reindeers were resting up so they could be filled with energy and ready to take off when Santa needed them. Mrs. Claus sat in her wooden rocking chair, knitting a new sweater for her husband. The most important person living at the North Pole, wasn’t doing anything important at all. Instead of preparing for Christmas, clumsy Santa, had lost his only pair of shiny black boots!
“If I don’t have my boots, I can’t go anywhere. If I don’t find them soon, I might not be able to deliver presents on Christmas Eve!” Santa cried out. He paced around in his pink polka-dotted slippers, wandering from one room to the next while searching for his boots.
First he searched his bedroom, making a huge mess in the process. He dug into his closet and drawers, throwing Christmas hats, rain jackets, comfortable jeans, and even undergarments out of his way. When he didn’t find anything there, he started looking behind the curtains, under the bed, and behind his television. There was still nothing!
“If they’re not in my bedroom, where could they be?” Santa asked himself. “Hohoho, I should go ask my wife, she always knows where things are,” He went to find Mrs. Claus in the living room. He gently tapped her on the shoulder. “Honey, do you know where my boots are?” he asked.
Mrs. Claus stopped knitting the sweater, looked up and asked, “Those shiny black boots?”
“Yes those shiny black ones. I need them for Christmas Eve,” Santa replied. He then paused and counted days on his fingers. “Which is the day after tomorrow!” He finally exclaimed when he remembered that it was already the 22nd.
Mrs. Claus shook her head. “I’m sorry dear, but I haven’t seen them in a while. Go ask the elves, maybe they know where they are.”
“That’s a brilliant idea! Thank you honey, I knew I could count on you,” Santa said with a jolly big smile. He went to the workshop and found an elf that was carefully carving decorations on a wooden toy train. “Hello there young elf! You’re Thomas, correct?”
“Good morning Santa Claus! Yes, I’m Thomas the elf,” Thomas replied in a high squeaky voice. “What brings you to the workshop?” he asked.
“Hoho, Thomas have you or any of the other elves seen my shiny black boots anywhere?” Santa asked. He pointed at his pink slippers, “I need my boots for Christmas Eve, these slippers aren’t warm enough,” he added with a chuckle. “Plus imagine how silly I’d look if I went around delivering presents in these slippers!”
“Oh! I do recall a snowman talking about seeing some boots yesterday,” Thomas said. He pointed out the window at a snowman that was busy building himself a girlfriend. “It was that snowman, maybe you should go ask him.”
Santa thanked Thomas and made his way outside to the snowman. “Hello there snowman!” Santa greeted.
“Hi Santa! What brings you here so early in the morning?” the snowman asked. He just finished building his own snow-woman and seemed pretty satisfied with the result.
“Well, you see, I can’t find my boots anywhere, Thomas the elf said he heard you talking about some boots,” Santa said with a sigh. “I really need to find them!”

“Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing a pair of boots somewhere!” the snowman said. “While I was collecting rocks to use on my snow-woman as eyes,” he said while he gestured to his new girlfriend. “I saw Rudolph bringing a pair of boots into the stall with his antlers!”
“What is Rudolph doing with my boots? Do reindeers need boots?” Santa questioned. “Thank you snowmen, I’ll bring you and your girlfriend fantastic presents for Christmas!” He waved and left for the reindeer stall.
“Hello Santa!” the reindeers greeted when Santa entered the stall. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and, Blitzen were all comfortably resting in there stalls. Rudolph the red nose reindeer was nowhere to be seen.
“Hello reindeers, have any of you seen Rudolph?” Santa asked.
“Rudolf?” the reindeers chimed in at the same time. “Yes! Yes! He’s at the back!” They were so synchronized it sounded like only one reindeer was speaking. “He has a present for you!”
“A present?” Santa wondered what Rudolph prepared for him.
Just then Rudolph appeared from behind a stack of hay and placed a pair of shiny black boots in front of Santa. “Merry Christmas Santa!” Rudolph said. “I polished your boots for you, so it’ll look nice and sparkly on Christmas Eve.”
Santa chuckled heartily, “So that’s where my boots were! Thank you so much Rudolph, but I must say, that you gave me a lot of trouble,” He changed into the newly polished boots. “I looked everywhere for them!”
“Sorry Santa, I didn’t mean to cause you any trouble,” Rudolph apologized. “I just wanted to give you a surprise!”
Santa patted Rudolph’s head, “Thank you very much, it was a very pleasant surprise. Hoho, now rest up reindeers, there are only two days left until Christmas Eve!”
Two days later on a snowy Christmas Eve, everyone was busy preparing for Santa’s departure. The elves were frantically packing gifts into sacks and loading them onto Santa’s sled. The energetic reindeers were all in position and ready for takeoff, with Rudolph at the very front. Mrs. Claus was still sitting in her wooden rocking chair knitting the almost completed sweater for her husband. What was the most important person living at the North Pole doing? He was on the sled, ready to deliver not only presents, but happiness to children all over the world. He was wearing his usual red Christmas hat, suit, pants and you can’t forget: his nicely polished, shiny black boots.
“Hohoho,” Santa laughed as the reindeers pounced into the night sky, “Merry Christmas!”
